The purpose of this web page is to share the results of the Butler Surname DNA project sponsored by Family Tree DNA. The results are presented in tabular form below. We have several different matching groups which are shown by the various colors. Research is continuing to understand how the members of these matching groups relate to each other.
The markers for the participants are listed along with their Haplo type. Haplogroups in green have been confirmed by SNP testing. Haplogroups in red have been predicted by Family Tree DNA.
Most participants have provided information about their earliest proven ancestor. Click on the Private Project Code for each individual to see any additional family information that they may have provided. More detailed information is provided below the table about the Butler Surname DNA Project.
The objective of the project is to use Y-DNA testing to identify the various Butler families and to bring together those members with common ancestry. Due to the loss of paper records, there are family ties that have been lost in history; and with this technology some of these can be reestablished.

The Family Tree DNA test kit consists of two cheek scrapers and two collection tubes---designed for a single persons use. Each tube contains a fluid designed to arrest bacteria growth, so you can scrape your cheek and return your kit in any type of weather (hot or cold). The freshness of your sample will remain intact for months.
Your genetic information will be added to the Family Tree DNA secure, private, and confidential non-web-based result database where you will receive an exciting potential benefit. As other people order their genetic tests, they will either be looking for a relationship to another specific individual (example above) or they will be submitting for a comparison to the database library. If a match occurs in the future, you will be informed of this relative's existence so that you can contact that person, if you desire. You may also submit your results to be posted on this website and provide information on your oldest known Butler ancestor and related family members.
