My earliest known ancestor is James Anthony Butler 1740-1811 who married Winifred Brooks 1743 - 1831 and lived in  Edgefield Co, SC.  His son was John Butler 1759 - 1831 who married Elizabeth Cleckler 1784 - 1863 and lived in Edgefield Co., SC.   Their son was John Sampson Butler
