Generation No. 1
1. SAMUEL BUTLER was born in VA, and died Abt. Feb 1825 in Monroe Co., GA.
He married MARY MOORE (sometimes referred to as “Polly”) before
1812 in pbl GA, daughter of James Moore of Taliaferro Co., GA. She was born
Abt. 1780 in GA, and died Bef. 1870 in pbl GA.
Notes for SAMUEL: We think our Samuel is living in Jones Co., GA in the 1820
census. (There are also a couple of other Butlers in early Jones Co., GA). We
believe that he and his wife came from the Taliaferro/Wilkes/Oglethorpe/Greene
Co., GA area. He purchased the land in Monroe Co., GA and moved there before
1825. This land was in LL #20, 6th Land District, Redbone community, western
Monroe Co., GA. His burial place is unknown at this time (fall 2005).
Notes for MARY: In the 1850 Monroe Co., GA census, Mary is head of household, farming, born GA, and 70 years old. (This is supposed to be 60?). This Mary is living with son Daniel P., 29, daughter Betsy, 21, and daughter Jane Butler Williamson, a 31-year-old widow with two children, Sarah E., 5, and Mary J., 2. By 1860 Mary is listed as a farmer, age 70, living with son Daniel, 37, and daughter Elizabeth, 30. Mary has died by the 1870 census. Her burial place is unknown at this time (fall 2005).
Children of SAMUEL BUTLER and MARY are:
2. i. ISSAC H. BUTLER, b. 1812, GA; d. Aft. 1880, pbl GA.
3. ii. JAMES MILTON BUTLER, b. 19 Feb 1814, pbl GA; d. 01 Jan 1893, pbl
GA.
4. iii. JANE BUTLER, b. 1819, pbl GA; d. pbl GA.
5. iv. DANIEL P. BUTLER, b. Bet. 1821 - 1823, GA; d. Abt. Sep 1877, Monroe Co.,
GA.
v. ELIZABETH BUTLER, b. 1824, GA.
Notes: Elizabeth “Betsy” Butler never married. She lived with
family members in Monroe Co., GA her whole life.
In the 1850 census of Monroe Co., GA, we find Daniel P. Butler, 29 years old,
living with sister Betsy, 21, sister Jane Butler Williamson, a 31 year old
widow with two children Sarah E., 5, and Mary J., 2, and his mother Mary, 70.
(acc. to other records, she may have only been 60). By the 1860 census he is
still in Monroe Co., age 37, with mother Mary, 70, and sister Elizabeth, 30.
(This is most likely "Betsy"). In 1870, he is a 49-year-old farmer, living with
wife Mary, 25 and keeping house, sister Elizabeth, 46, and sons Samuel, 4, and
Nathaniel, 1. By 1880 Daniel has evidently died, leaving sister Elizabeth head
of household at age 56, her sister-in-law Mary, 36, and Daniel and wife Mary's
four children, Samuel, 13, Nathan, 11, Aaron, 10 and Mary L., 6.

A descendent of James M. Butler, shared these notes re: her ancestor: "The Butlers are from Scotch-Irish descent. The family came from Ireland and first landed in Charleston, S.C. Later they came to Baldwin County, Wilkes County and possibly into Jasper County and settled in Monroe County living a good part of the time in the Johnstonville District," and "I have been told Mary Musgrove was full-blooded Indian. James Butler was too old to join the Confederate Army when the Civil War first started. He tried to enlist and was given the assignment of Guard Duty at Andersonville. He still wanted to join the fighting and was finally sent to Savannah to do active duty but the war ended before he reached Savannah and he never got to see action."

(acc. to other records, she may have only been 60). By the 1860 census he is

of household at age 56, her sister-in-law Mary, 36, and Daniel and Mary's four
children, Samuel, 13, Nathan, 11, Aaron, 10 and Mary L., 6.
Isaac Butler applies for letter of administration on estate of Daniel Butler, deceased; published Dec 1876; brother James M. Butler and Mr. Williamson are both signers/appraisers of Daniel’s estate record.
Daniel Butler died before 4 February 1878, probably in the fall of 1877.
Some of the early Georgia Butler family must have migrated to Southwest Georgia in Decatur and Grady Counties around the turn of the century; there are Nathan and Aaron Butlers there also.

Notes for NATHANIEL DANIEL BUTLER:
TX Death Certificate:
His father's name is erroneously stated as "Nathaniel Butler" which is of
course, the decedent's name; the informant, L. T. Butler, his son, when asked
"Father's name?" was thinking of his own father instead of his father's
father's name. He must've snapped to when asked about his mother's name,
however because he gave the correct name of his grandmother. Nathaniel's date
of birth is also listed as Nov. 25, 1866, which may be off by two years.
(1868?) He is listed as 92 years old and has lived in Beaumont for 2 years
(probably in the Fondren Nursing Home that whole time). Interestingly enough,
it lists his birthplace as Macon, GA, which was probably a more well known town
than "Redbone," "Culloden" or just simply Monroe County. He is listed as male,
white, and widowed. More About NATHANIEL DANIEL BUTLER: Name 2: Nathan Butler
